Top Five

Top Five Songs on your iTunes that are under two minutes, that you kind of wish were longer, but not really, because they’re kind of perfect the way they are:

1) Spoon - You Gotta Feel It
2) The Beatles - She Came in Through the Bathroom Window
3) Tori Amos - Mr. Zebra
4) Cat Stevens - The Wind
5) Sam Cooke - Running Out theTape.**

(Okay, this is kind of a bootleggy sort of non-track, but it’s basically this recording where the announcer says, “Every day, I try to describe soul, maybe you can hum eight bars of what soul represents,” and Sam Cooke launches into this soulful spiritual thing and it will literally kill you. As he finishes, the DJ softly says, “Sam Cooke’s yours…he’ll never grow old…”and you die, all over again.)

You go.

I love a good Sam Cooke reference. Too bad I don’t have that song. I must find it right away!

Sam’s vocal skills have been praised for the last 50 years, but his “hum-ability” is rarely discussed and should be praised as well. I specifically chose his humming intro to “Trouble Blues” as my website’s intro. Great way to run out the tape, tripper!

The man interviewing Sam is the legendary DJ Magnificent Montague, by the way.

    3) Lo! How a Rose E’er Blooming - Sufjan Stevens
    4) Bookends Theme - Simon and Garfunkel

Are you surprised I found a way to incorporate Michael Cera? I think not!

Dude. That reminds me. When is Sufjan Stevens going to make a new album? Seriously. Seriously. Pick a state and get on with your fucking genius already.

I loooove Trouble Blues! Does your book give some insight into the circumstances surrounding his death? My friend Bess and I have been talking about it a lot this week.

Absolutely. One of the main reasons I wrote my book was because there were a lot of things going on in Sam’s personal life (mostly related to business dealings) that sheds light on his last days. Also, I include the input of a valued source as to what really happened at the Hacienda Motel. Tell Bess to check out the reader reactions on my Amazon.com listing.
