If you’re going to San Francisco…

Posted by Jenn on March 2, 2008 at 11:32 pm.

I had been wanting to go to San Francisco for pretty much ever.  When my college roomie Annie moved out there to be a sweet Californian nurse, it was the perfect excuse to make the trip for some straight west coastin’.  Jess’s (also know as Jeezikah) brother lives out there as well, so she came out of the wedding-planning-abyss to join us.

Here’s Day One! With pictures I’ve already put on Facebook. (Anti-climactic :( )

Lombard Street.  For some reason, I kept thinking of The Real World San Francisco, because this is where their house was.  Pedro would always drop the “d” and pronounced it “Lombarr Street,” so I did the same.

“Stand in the middle of the road! It’s fine!”

Totally taken in front of someone’s private entrance. Whatever. You live on one of the most famous streets in the country. I’m taking a shot of your damn gate flowers.

This guy was really hip-looking and had two equally hip-looking collies.  This picture is crap but proof that he and they exist.

Sooo hilly.

Knotty, dramatic trees.

No one in San Francisco rides the trolley, yada, yada.  I know.  But I had to get some shots, even if they were the most commericial trolleys known to man. I don’t think these were the ones Judy Garland was singing about.

I made Annie circle the block so I could get a shot of The Fillmore.

The city is full of cool people taking walks and hanging out with their gorgeous, well-behaved dogs.  I kind of became obsessed with them.

Sooo fluffy.

This scene might look familiar.  Does “doo-bee-doo bop, bah-DOW,” mean anything to you?
Yes. This was the shot from the Full House opening sequence.

Annie, Me, Jess. I feel like this is one of those pictures I’m going to look back later and totally mock what I’m wearing.  And by later, I mean next week.

Everyone I know that takes photographs tends to have a theme that they gravitate towards. My dad takes hundred of pictures of old barns.  I seem to keep taking shots through flowers.  You’ll notice this motif throughout the many of the pictures for this trip.  It’s probably a very amateur thing, but I think I just get really excited about the fact that, wait, I have manual capabilities AND it’s digital? Weeeeee!!!!

At the end of Day 1, we went to Cha Cha Cha in the Haight-Ashbury district.  Above is the result of much sangria and tapas.  The sangria came by the pitcher.  This was the only photograph I had that was in focus.  Note to self - put camera in automatic mode before one drop of alcohol touches lips.

This week over at the Yahoo version of The Judy Garland Experience beloved entertainer from the 20th century, Sammy Davis Jr, takes a crack at the Judy Garland songbook. Sammy sings ‘em all, including The Man That Got Away, Over The Rainbow, But Not For Me, and many other Garland classics. He even sings two duets with the great lady herself, as well as one with her daughter Liza.
This kind of show biz, and this kind of entertainment doesn’t exist anymore!
Another great file posted over at the Yahoo Judy Garland Experience is a radio program that features an interview with a talkative flight attendant who recounts an adventurous red eye flight she took with Judy and her hairdresser, Orville, back in 1963.
This one is a real hoot!
Other new files over at the Yahoo version of The Judy Garland Experience include two episodes of the Charlie MCCarthy radio show. One is from June 7, 1942, and the other is from December 7, 1941, better known as Pearl Harbor Day.
This nerve wracking broadcast which featured Judy, along with Abbott And Costello ,was constantly interrupted with news of various countries making declarations of war!
Nevermind that Judy rises to the occasion and offers up some great entertainment, this was history in the making!
Even if you are not a Judy fan you might want to check out this broadcast for it’s historical significance alone!
And if that isn’t enough several parodies of the song The Lady Is A Tramp, as sung by Frank Sinatra have been posted over at the Yahoo experience. Frank salutes his friends Orson Welles, Maureen Starkey, and Spiro Agnew, as well as remarkable duets of the song with the great Ella Fitzgerald which were recorded over the span of 33 years. There is even an ultra rare rendition performed by Frank with Buddy Greco!
And if that isn’t enough there are also tons of other rare audio files by Judy and others.
For those of you who aren’t familiar with The Judy Garland Experience it is an exciting group on yahoo that features lively and informative discussions, and the rarest audio, video, and photo files of Judy anywhere! The membership includes Garland family members, people who knew and worked with Judy, other celebrities, authors, film makers, and fans of all levels and persuasions. The only one missing is you.
Please stop by The Judy Garland Experience and check it out. I promis you won’t be disappointed.
