So, sometime in the 2004-2005 academic schoolyear, I attended this conference/pep rally for Starcom, a media company in Chicago. I came suit-clad, resume in hand, prepared to go to a networking battle with those little Business-major motherfuckers. In the end, I was not aggressive, at all. I figured I would apply online and let fate take its course. [I did not, however, see the future, in which I would never get a "real job," and would end up depressed, and working in retail.]
I think I’ve applied twice for their “media associate” position (which is pretty much always open) to no avail whatsoever. Third time is a charm, apparently, because I got an e-mail today asking for a phone interview. I nearly peed my pants, because the first website listed when you Google ”starcom media” is “Best Entry Level Jobs by the Princeton Review.” I had actually forgotten how badly I once wanted to work there. There, you will also see this:
Average Number of Applications Each Year: 750
Average Number Hired over the Last Ten Years: 75 to 100
Argh. I just lost my Starcom erection.
To be fair though, this is the first major contact I’ve gotten from an employer in a long time, and it’s a major one. This is not a small-town agency. This company has clients like KELLOGG’S and TIC TAC; big time.
If you’ve got good karma, you know where to send it.
